GLOBALIZATION IN THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY

According to Riley (2009) globalization is a process where an increased proportion of economic, social and cultural activity is carried out across national borders.

In the 21st century, with the growing levels of globalization in hospitality industry, hotel companies will need to learn diverse management styles to survive and develop in environmental circumstances with high levels of uncertainty as well as understand the implication of future effects, both positive and negative of the changing environment in which they operate (Shrivastava, 2012).

Globalization has both positive and negative impacts on hospitality industry which are as follows;

Multilingual services-Due to globalization more and more people from different parts of the world are touring around the world. Hotels got benefit by this modernization but to maintain this travelling many hotels hire people who know different languages so that their customers feel comfortable and safe, for example a tour operations company based on French market will have to employ French translators if they operate out of a non-French speaking country (Puri,2012).

Increasing knowledge about different variety of foods-Because of this vast trend of globalization, more and more restaurants and hotels have different variety of food because you never know which people are coming from which part of the world. Everybody love food and when they see their own food  somewhere  they feel so relaxed, for example Chinese tourists travel all around the world and so big cities have “China Town”. These things attract Chinese people to go and visit these places which are far from china but yet very similar Chinese tradition (Puri, 2012).

Exposure  to different cultures-According to Stream (2011) due to globalization the managers of the hospitality industry are able to learn about different cultures-as they get to mingle with people from various walks of life-and thus, increase their knowledge.

Larger Market-Because of globalization the customer base has increased greatly. People travel not only for holidays, but business, health and various other purposes too. This has increased the market for the hospitality industry, which gets its major income is from international visitors (Stream,2011).

In conclusion the world is moving more and more  towards globalization, the hospitality industry  needs to communicate more quickly, operate more productively, offer their employees  greater opportunity and deliver their customers enhanced benefits.
